action to approve a row

hai,

i am making a demand and issue system . in demand i have a approve column. what i want that when a manager logs in and check the row and click on approve action the approve row value should be automatically set to userid of logged in user.

for this i tried the tutorial in select record operation. but the approve.php in actions folder is not going through i received several syntax error.
can any body guide me through a working example.
