Adding and subtracting permissions

In the permissions.ini file, if I define a new role adding new permissions, and then define a second role extending the first, can permissions added in the first role subsequently be subtracted in the second role? From what I can ascertain in my own applications, it appears to be working in some cases but not others. I thought I would get a definitive answer to the question before investigating the matter further.

Yes. You can both add and subtract permissions in sub-roles.
